SAP ABAP is a 4th generation language that stands for Advanced Business Application Programming. This is why SAP is often referred to as SAP ERP/4. SAP ABAP was created to help people spend less time communicating with machines. It's a programming language that comes closer to human language than third-generation languages like C, C++, JAVA, and others.
It's more of a conceptualization of the vocabulary that will be used to produce reports and screens. It eventually grows to become a full language in and of itself. It cuts the time and cost of software development in half. The entire SAP ERP software is known as ABAP, which is a case-insensitive programming language that always ends with a period.
What does an SAP ABAP Consultant do?
SAP ABAP Consultant specializes in designing and recommending techniques to improve system operations in the information technology industry.ABAP Consultants usually meet with clients to determine their needs and desires, perform analysis and evaluations, collect and evaluate data from different activities, formulate action plans and cost estimates, conduct risk assessments, and identify existing problems, addressing them quickly and efficiently.
Furthermore, SAP ABAP consultant work in a team environment, which requires a constant line of communication to ensure a smooth and reliable workflow.
Following are a few duties and responsibilities that are performed by SAP ABAP consultants across different industries:
1. Create a BDC for FICO in order to measure and update full payment, partial payment, and pending payments.
2. Build an interface to update the SRM org hierarchy to represent the legacy system's changes.
3. For the sales (OTC) department, create an ALV object model commission report that is sorted by a sales representative.
4. Build dynamic internal tables and develop an RFC link to compare data in other systems.
5. Gather requirements and technological viability in order to meet client expectations, as well as define implementation guidelines for the ABAP team.
6. Create file-to-IDOC interfaces that meet the needs of the customer.
7. Make use of a number of free program-specific search aids.
8. Use run-time analysis and SQL trace to improve code optimization.
9. Build test scenarios for all of the technologies and engage actively in QA testing for all of them.
10. Provide go-live and post-go-live support, as well as business process mapping and system criteria specifications.
11. Create and change layout sets in accordance with the specifications.
12. Work on extracting, transforming, and loading data from a variety of sources, such as excel and flat files, using ETL.

Personas Day São Paulo – Brazil – 2018
Clique aqui para ver a versão em Português desta página --- Personas Day Mobile Edition São Paulo – Brazil Joins us to learn how to use SAP Screen Personas to create some magic and improve the user experience to people who use S/4HANA or ECC systems. And, yes, now we can do it even to tablet and smartphone users! We will have a full day of innovation and learning using one of SAP’s best tools to radically improve the user experience on the SAP ERP systems in your organization, whether you are on S/4HANA or ECC. In December 2017, SAP finally announced support for mobile devices through SAP Screen Personas! That means now you can easily run any transaction (*), whether standard or custom (also known as Z transaction) on tablets or smartphones. (*) With the latest version of SAP Screen Personas 3.0 SP06, any transaction can run on mobile devices, however, SAP is still validating and gradually announcing official support for transactions. You can find further details on SAP Note 2557076.   ---  Registrations The Personas Day São Paulo will be a free event with limited seats. We will have few seats available, so please sign up only if you are sure you will attend. Follow this page in the next few days, we will post here the link for registrations.   If you have any doubt you can reach us at [email protected] ---  Event motivation: SAP Screen Personas is being adopted by more and more companies around the world Have you ever heard about SAP Screen Personas? If not, it’s about time. SAP Screen Personas has been launched in 2013 by SAP and there is a growing team located at SAP Labs in Palo Alto, California, which is continually working exclusively to improve the product and add new features. To get an idea of SAP’s speed and commitment to Screen Personas, the most recent service pack was released in December 2017 and the team is already working on the next two service packs. If you knew Screen Personas before the release of version 3.0 and for some reason didn’t like it, please just forget and give it another try! Today in the version 3.0, it is a totally new product, solidly based on current web technologies in the same way as SAPUI5 (Fiori). Screen Personas now also works with the SAP GUI desktop in its versions for Windows and for Java and with ABAP WebDynpro. See below some updated metrics on SAP Screen Personas usage across the world. These metrics were shown by the SAP Screen Personas team on the most recent monthly meeting, which took place on February 21, 2018:     ---  Innovation: So now Screen Personas runs ERP transactions on tablets and smartphones? I have been working on Screen Personas’ customer projects since 2013 and also as a SAPUI5 developer (Fiori) since 2015. Because of this, I have done some presentations on how Screen Personas and SAPUI5 complement each other: I have presented in events like SAP Forum in São Paulo (Brazil) and some SAP Inside Track events in São Leopoldo (SAP Labs), São Paulo, Joinville (Brazil), and Barcelona (Spain). In all these events, and also amongst all the SAP customers that I have worked with, the first question everyone asked me has always been the same: does SAP Screen Personas run on smartphones and tablets? Until near the end of 2017, the answer to that was: No, but even then there were already countless things that could be done with it to improve the experience and make it easier for people using SAP ERP on desktops and notebooks. But in December 2017, along with Screen Personas 3.0 SP06 launch, SAP finally announced a new technology called Slipstream Engine. With Slipstream Engine, Screen Personas “magically” gained the ability to make the SAP S/4HANA or ECC screens “responsive”. It means that now when using SAP Screen Personas, the screens can be correctly displayed and are usable through tablet and smartphones using touch interfaces. So, yes, now you can use SAP Screen Personas to make existing ERP’s desktop transactions available to your company’s tablets and smartphones. And, also, you can make these transactions much simpler when you use the features of Screen Personas to automate the tasks your users need to manually perform every day. Finally, almost everything you build using Screen Personas will run on smartphones and tablets, and on desktops or notebooks running SAP GUI for Windows or SAP GUI for Java.   This is the current status for the SAP Screen Personas roadmap: You can read more about the future plans for SAP Screen Personas in this Peter Spielvogel’s blog postor in pages 91-91 of the most recent SAP Fiori roadmap.   ---  Learn more: ASUG Event – Going Mobile with SAP Screen Personas On March 14, ASUG (Americas’ SAP Users’ Group) and the SAP Screen Personas’ team at SAP Labs in Palo Alto, will promote a webcast showing some of the new SAP Screen People 3.0 SP06 possibilities. There will be a special focus on the new Slipstream Engine rendering for mobile devices. So, if you want to warm up and know more about this new and exciting technology, subscribe now! This is the link to subscribe to the ASUG webcast: UX: Going Mobile with SAP Screen Personas: New Slipstream Engine Renders on iPad, Android, Mobile Phones   ---  What can I expect from Personas Day event? Personas Day is not training, but it’s like it was. Have you ever been to an SAP CodeJam event? If so, you will find that Personas Day will be very similar. If you have not been in an SAP CodeJam yet, it is best described as a day when people get together and have access to an SAP system previously prepared with one chosen technology and be able to explore and to learn. There will be some materials to guide your exploration and also a subject matter expert available to guide the participants while they explore and learn. (See what an SAP CodeJam actually looks like) So, here is what you’ll find at the Personas Day: you will have access to a S/4HANA system with the latest version of SAP Screen Personas so you can get to know it, have some hands-on experience and learn by doing. You will receive written instructions on how to explore the system and build some nice scenarios by yourself. You’ll also have two SAP Screen Personas experts available to support and guide you through the day: me (Douglas Cezar) and Cristiano Hansen, from SAP Labs Latin America. We’ll show everything you need to know, so after the event, if you wish, you can go back to your company, install and start using SAP Screen Personas right away.   During the event we will show you how to: * Install SAP Screen Personas 3.0 SP06 in your ECC or S/4HANA environment. You’ll see a brief installation demo and how simple and fast it is.   * Use the Screen Personas 3.0 SP06 administration interface, which has been greatly improved and is a very easy and powerful tool to manage all the flavors built with SAP Screen Personas.   * Use SAP Screen Personas to change and simplify SAP ERP screens, even if you are a systems analyst or a functional consultant who don’t know programming at all.   * Create new SAP Screen Personas scripts, powered by JavaScript and ABAP programming languages, so you’ll be able to build even more advanced and extremely powerful scenarios to simplify, automate and even eliminate tasks users at your organization are required to manually perform today.   * Create a new “adaptive” screen, that will automatically adapt to different devices’ screens and run on notebooks, tablet or smartphones.   * Use the new Slipstream Engine to perform existing transactions on mobile devices.   * We will also show a brief demo of SAP Screen Personas running on SAP GUI for Windows.   Get ready and bring your notebook, your tablet, and smartphone. Let’s build and learn together with the SAP community!     ---  When The Personas Day São Paulo will happen at the beginning of May 2018. The schedule is still being set and will be shortly announced.    Where Sao Paulo – Brazil The event location is still being defined and will be announced shortly.   --- To learn more about other SAP Screen Personas events, see here: Personas Day 2017 – UKISUG UK Personas Training Day 2016   If you have any questions, write to us at [email protected]   Soon we will have the link with more information available here and also announce the opening of the registrations for Personas Day, which will have limited seats. So, don’t forget to follow this page!   --- Organizers and Instructors Douglas Cezar SAP independent developer and consultant since 2004, he has worked on projects as an ABAP and SAPUI5 developer and leader, and also as an architect of SAP solutions, including Workflow and Gateway technologies. With SAP Screen Personas he has already been part of projects that revolutionized the user experience for sales and logistics teams that use SAP ERP, as well as have worked building POCs and demonstrations for companies that are evaluating the possibility of using SAP Screen Personas. He has delivered presentations to SAP customers and partners worldwide in the SAP Screen Personas Practitioners’ Forum, a monthly event organized by the SAP Screen Team at SAP Labs in Palo Alto, California, and by the UX (User Experience) team at of SAP headquarters in Walldorf, Germany. Since 2015 he has been a speaker, focusing on the synergies that exist between SAP Screen Personas and SAPUI5 (Fiori), speaking at SAP Forum and SAP Inside Track events in São Paulo, Campinas, Joinville, São Leopoldo (Brazil) and Barcelona (Spain). He currently works as a specialist in SAP Screen Personas and also in web and mobile application development using SAPUI5 and OpenUI5. ---   Cristiano Hansen Expert Support Engineer – SAP Labs Latin America   Cristiano (Cris) Hansen was a network administrator (1999-2004) and college professor (2004-2007), when discovered the SAP world e became a support consultant in the SAP Global Support Center Brazil, in São Leopoldo, nowadays part of the SAP Labs Latin America. A Detailed Primer On Webdynpro And Its Significance In Business
By Patrick Gray
Programming is a branch of technology that has seen great innovations come to the fold. Thanks to smart applications, work that would require significant human effort in the past can now be accomplished in no time. One of the technologies that help businesses run useful applications today is webdynpro. The proprietary web software technology was brought into existence by SAP SE. Its chief focus is on server sided enterprise software. Its user friendly and robust interface is what inherently makes the technology special. To cap it all, it is programmed using coding languages that are extensively interoperable. What this essentially means is that applications relying on it can be ported to almost all types of systems. The two main systems that organizations use these days are UNIX based ones and those that run on Windows platforms. Truth be told, scalability is a highly desirable feature in business systems and applications. You want applications that can run in all manner of operating systems, a feature guaranteed by the technology. There are two versions of the solution. These are the Java and ABAP suites. Earlier versions of it were based on Java. These versions experienced very little commercial success, a factor that prompted the development of the ABAP suite. At the moment, the Java version is stalled. This is due to the pilot process of replacing it with ABAP. While some developers are still stuck on Java, there is minimal technical support that SAP SE provides for it. Any new functionality is implemented in ABAP. Apart from the great user interface synonymous with ABAP, there are many other benefits of the technology. One benefit that businesses stand to gain is the support of disparate backend services. Businesses have the chance to integrate many aspects of their primary databases in applications. Moreover, it is known to integrate properly with other business technologies besides supporting applications that are used for large scale purposes. The main advantage, however, is that is offers support for a large number of client applications and devices. This means users can access applications using their web browsers, mobile phones and widget engines. This is a good thing as it ensures the aspect of flexibility is upheld. Its disadvantages are also worth noting. For starters, it has a known history of rendering incorrectly in several web browsers. What is more, its proprietary code only works on SAP servers. Therefore, you must install SAP regardless of the operating system you use. When looking for a programmer for your company, you might want to bear a few crucial factors in mind. Firstly, go for someone with some proven experience with Java and the ABAP suite as a whole. With programming, specifics matter a lot. You also need someone with the right academic background, this probably being a degree in Computer Science. There is a lot more you could learn about the technology. If you make the internet your best friend, you will certainly gain lots of important information. The underlying fact nonetheless is that the technology can help your business run more efficiently.
